The pathway of the viandante
We suggest to discover the natural and artistic beauties of the little cities that dot the coast from Lecco towards north walking on foot the "Sentiero del Viandante", this is an antique passage way from the Milan area going towards Switzerland, that is near by the lake way, proves the rule of the Lake Como territory in the commercial traffi cs. This path goes up to Abbadia Lariana to half coast inside and out the villages and runs through the history up to arrive to Colico, to penetrate all the way to Valtellina feet. This pathway has a length of 45 km therefore has to be walked in several halts. Depending on the fi tness level the pathway can be divided in 3 or 4 halts. Thanks to the frequent intersection between the pathway and railway Lecco- Colico it is possible to make one halt at a time, then going back to the starting point by train. The modest altitudes and the excellent exposition of the pathway make the itinerary accessible in every season. The antique origins of the pathway could go back to the Roman ages, the existence of this way used for the local traffic and also as alternative way to reach the more facilitated Valsassina used to connect Milan to the Valtellina and to go to the Swiss routes, it is documented since the Fourth century, in the communal statutes of the parishes of Bellano, Dervio and Lecco.Link:
The Eastern Branch of Lake Como
THE EASTERN BRANCH The Eastern side of the lake is run through by the ancient military road towards the Stelvio, nowadays doubled by highway 36. This side is rich in ancient and picturesque villages: it offers an astonishing itinerary on the east side of the Lario, ideal for people who conceive their holiday as a relaxing period but also perfect to alternate cultural visits and sport ctivities. The seasons offer different sceneries, sometimes happy and lively, sometimes relaxing and romantic, they can really suit everyone's taste. The road that runs near the lake borders on the gardens of several wonderful villas alternated with pleasant beaches and small centres where the tourist can fi nd the tranquillity of an unforgettable stay and enjoy a very favourable climate. Numerous are the chances of visiting museums and parks and they satisfy every curiosity: the museum of the Setifi cio in Abbadia Lariana (silk factory) is noteworthy and a rare contribution to the industrial archaeology in Italy. In Abbadia is also preserved a trace of the medieval past with the remaining of the Torraccia (XII-XIII century). In the village of Mandello Lario a stop is recommended to visit two religious complexes: the sanctuary of the Madonna del Fiume and the church of San Giorgio. The sanctuary of the Madonna del Fiume, was built between 1624 and 1627 after the flooding of the river Meria and the destruction of the chapel of the Beata Vergine where according to tradition only the part of the wall with the painted image of the Virgin and the Child remained intact. The church of S. Giorgio is a small roman temple that hosts an astonishing series of high medieval frescos dedicated to the culture of death: the cycle of frescos wants to illustrate the salvation plan for mankind in opposition to the capital vices painted on the hell fresco placed in front of them. A legend tells that it was founded by a crusade soldier or even by a Templar monk coming back from the holy Land; again in Mandello there is the museum of Moto Guzzi that tells the story of the motorbike from Lake Como. One of the most popular happenings, if not the most popular abroad, is the traditional "Raduno Moto Guzzi" (Moto Guzzi Rally). This international meeting is capable of reuniting "guzzisti" (Guzzi enthusiasts) from all over the world every year during the month of September. The itinerary goes on in Lierna with the small medieval village named Castello that still has the structure of fortifi ed building to protect a small peninsula overhanging the water. The ancient origins of this place are proved by the presence of the small church of San Maurizio, probably of Romanesque origin, that rises on the lake shore and preserves some of its ruins incorporated into the surrounding houses. In the nearby hamlet called Villa during some excavations, rests of roman houses were discovered, because of these fi ndings suggest us the thought of a roman colonial village. Lierna, with its beaches, the White River and the Black River, is one of the most visited and popular summer holiday resorts on the whole lake. On the opposite shore of the lake there is the Costiera degli Olivi: right in front of the city of Lecco there is Malgrate that with its city centre introduces us to the coast which leads towards Bellaggio before the promontory of the Rocca, it welcomes the visitor with a romantic pier and a multitude of typical premises. Of particular relevance are the restored silk factory Bovara Reina, the palace Agudio, town hall seat, and the pleasant skyline of nicely restored houses. The road follows to the gallery beyond Parè di Valmadrera bay with the little docks for pleasure crafts. Walking along the blind background street there are quiet corners and many beaches visited by the bathers in summer time. Onno, Vassenna and Limonta are hamlets of Oliveto Lario, which has taken its name from the cultivation of plants that produce tasteful local greenish oil: here pleasant sceneries for vacations open up. The Sanctuary of the "Madonna del Moletto" at Limonta is very particular and composed of two churches, one on top of the other, built in 1606 and 1640, with frescoes by Gian Paolo Recchi. Como lake
Characterized by mountains rich of vegetation and numerous streams, the territory around Lake Como offers an extremely heterogeneous landscape. Along the rivers, it is typified by green meadows, thick woods, imposing rocks, picturesque villages overlooking the lake with beautiful villas, parks and gardens. In addition to the lacustrian flora, also azaleas, rhododendrons, perfect flowers, cedar- and orange-trees cover the land emerging from the lake. In the areas where climate is particularly mild and wet, there are olive-trees, palm-trees, cypresses, bay trees and several subtropical plants. The abundance of water that flows into the lake contributes to this lush vegetation. More than 30 streams, in fact, enrich this basin. In particular, the Mera, which springs in Valchiavenna, and the Adda, which originates in Valtellina and leaves the branch of Lecco after forming the tiny lakes of Garlate and Olginate. Also human settlements benefit from this richness of water flows: the majority of the centres developed in proximity of the sediments left by the rivers. In the sunniest areas, like Tremezzina, in winter climate never reaches cold temperatures. In summer hot temperatures are mitigated by a good ventilation. The mildest climate is enjoyed by the Mid-Lake, where the three branches meet. The landscape here is worldwide celebrated, above all the sight of Bellagio's promontory, the northern Grigna which overlooks Valsassina, and the panorama of the Upper Lake with the Alps chain on the background. Along the coast of the lake, especially from Cernobbio to Gravedona and in Bellagio, landscape is adorned by beautiful villas with parks full of flowers and rare exotic plants; among them, Villa Passalacqua in Moltrasio and Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, today turned into a sumptuous hotel with a magnificent park. Close to the extremity of Balbianello a Lenno the wonderful Villa Arconti opens the series of famous villas of Tremezzina, like Villa Carlotta, famous for its artistic masterpieces and the natural attractions of its flowering park. On the opposite side, in Bellagio, other villas, like Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi, are embellished by fabulous parks. The branch of Lecco offers the most severe and suggestive landscapes of the southern Grigna, a mountain group of dolomitic origin which reaches 2184 m, and the Corni of Canzo which, laying down towards the lake, create suggestive declivities and inlets. In this area there are numerous springs, like the one of Fiumelatte, described and celebrated by Leonardo of Vinci. This landscape is characterized by narrow elevated paths embraced by high slopes, like the famous Orrido di Bellano, an enchanting natural show which can be visited crossing flying bridges. Not far form here there is the Renaissance Villa Monastero of Varenna, used several times as location for cinema and TV productions, together with Menaggio, ancient and fascinating medieval village.Link: http://www.lombardiadautore.regione.lombardia.it/h
